Setting Up for Online Piano Lessons

Piano Teachers Connect's online piano teachers and students.

Setting up for online piano lessons is similar to setting up for in-person lessons. The only difference is that you’ll need to get your video calling platform and device ready.

In this guide, we’ll go over some basic steps to set up for your online piano lessons so you get maximum benefit and enjoyment out of them.

Step one: Gather your materials

You’ll need your piano and bench, music books or sheet music, and the device you’ll use for the video call.

It’s also important to have a pencil handy so you can make notations on your sheet music and write down anything you want to remember. Your piano teacher will send you any lesson notes after the lesson, but taking your own notes is often very helpful.

Step two: Warm up

If you have time, warming up before your lesson will help you get the most out of it. A good warmup gets you in the right frame of mind to focus on your piano lesson. It also helps your brain and fingers remember what you practiced during the week so you are ready to play it for your piano teacher.

Start by doing any warmup exercises your piano teacher has shown you. Then play through any music you plan to focus on during the lesson.

A warmup only takes a few minutes, but it can make a big difference in how effective your lesson time is.

Step three: Set up for the video call

To set up for your video call, you’ll need to position your device so that you and your piano will be visible on screen. This will allow your piano teacher to observe and give feedback on your technique and your posture, and it will facilitate good communication.

Once your device is in position, open your video calling app. The sign-in process varies with different platforms. Some require you to make an account, while others just require you to click a link provided by your teacher. For information about a specific platform, please click on the appropriate link below.

Finally, it’s a good idea to run an audio/video test before you start. You can do this within the video calling platform you are using.
